Research by the Institute of Directors (IOD) has found that most businesses agree with the Government that investing in training during the recession would help pave the way to financial recovery when the upturn arrives.

Miles Templeman, Director General, IOD, told Wake Up To Money, "This is a big change form previous recessions where cutbacks certainly occurred.

"This time they realise … how important it is to maintain the quality of their staff, indeed improve it, not only for the longer term but also for short term gains.

"This attitude towards training is a very strong one in the UK now and represents an understanding of how important skills are to compete.

"I think it (staff training) not only helps productivity, but increases staff morale. It means you can attract people when you want to and … it makes you much stronger as and when the upturn comes.

"The research shows it's across the board that there is this attitude towards training, but clearly some sectors, construction and so on, have suffered much more than others and in those clearly the balance would be different.

"Most companies on an ongoing basis are measuring customer satisfaction and various performance indicators that they've got, and they could see that the training directly helps into those measures, so … they can tell it works."
