Focus on Skills Help MJM Succeed and Create Jobs

Thu 06 Jan 2011

MJM Group in Co Down has strengthened its competitiveness, won new business abroad and created 30 new jobs this year through a strategic investment in training and skills development, Dr Bill McGinnis, the Northern Ireland Adviser on Employment and Skills has said.

Bill McGinnis was speaking during a visit to MJM Group’s new purpose-built 100,000 sq ft plant at Carnbane Business Park, Newry.

“MJM Group is a successful people-focused business that recognises the importance of training its people to the highest skills levels and thereby provide customers, including many high profile marine, hospitality and commercial organisations in global markets, the quality outfitting services that they expect.

“This focus on skills across a very broad range of activities including design, quantity surveying, contract management and joinery work is enabling this impressive company to win significant contracts in markets such as London, Germany, Singapore and the Caribbean.

“A structured approach to training, both in-house and with the support of external providers is contributing to its outstanding performance in terms of export success – all the company’s business is now outside the island of Ireland – and its excellent growth of 80 per cent this year in difficult market conditions.  Today, the company has an order book worth more than £22 million – up from £8.5 million in 2008.”

“The investment in people skills is a key feature of its commitment to set itself apart in all its markets and on each and every contract by delivering a high-quality finished product on time, and exceeding the client’s expectation.

“MJM is an excellent role model for other local companies, particularly in this difficult economic climate. Our smaller companies can succeed and grow in global markets and in terms of employment through continuous investment in skills.”

Jonathan Guest, MJM Group Managing Director, who briefed Dr McGinnis during the visit, said: “Our business depends on the skills and motivation of all our people particularly those who interact with clients.

“We seek to recruit, invest in and support the best people we can find. We recognised the importance of training by designing a special suite of rooms for skills development within the new factory in Newry.

“Our strategy aims to enable our employees to gain the skills to do their job to the highest level and also to offer them opportunities to gain expertise and qualifications for career progression.

“Our business mantra and part of our mission statement is that we have a ‘can do' attitude, and we find that clients really appreciate the extra effort we put into the delivery of their projects.”
